You find the terminal hack here

Hibernation mode

The mac does not hibernate when put to sleep, unless you configure Mac OS using a Mac OS terminal command. The following dashboard widget gives you an interactive control of hibernation modes. The mode "smart sleep" is what i want: always quick-sleep, except when batteri is about to run out. Then the last remaining power will be used to hibernate the computer so that I'm back in business after switching batteri:

Mac OS Keyboard shortcuts

If you are a Windows users, you need to learn new keyboard shortcuts. Mac keyboards are less cluttered, so you don't get much help there either..

Here is some help to find your favourite shortcuts:

Enable TAB to switch between dialog buttons

One of the most annoying drawbacks in Mac OS X user interface is the inability to use the TAB key to switch between dialog buttons, you simply have to use the mouse
(extremely annoying if you are doing some keyboard intensive work such as programming...)

...unless you go to the go to "System Preferences --> Keyboard --> Shortcuts" and select the "All Controls" option at the bottom of the page

Hint: Use Spacebar to select the button, not the Enter key (that will selecte the default button as usual)

Create zip-files without .DS_Store

The raw script command goes like this:

If you prefer working in the Finder, I've packaged an automator script that - when installed - will add a menu item named "Clean zip" to the "Services" menu of the folder context menu. Like this:

Once run, a zip file named by the selected (and compressed) folder will be created:

To install the utility:

  1. Download "Clean zip.zip" from here
  2. Double-click it to have it unarchived
  3. Copy the file named "Clean zip.workflow" to ~/Library/Services/
